Not the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter
0. Not the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter Overview
As you may have realized this is Not the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter. Really, it isn't.
For one, it is not in any way endorsed, supported or acknowledged by Gentoo. It just happened. And it's Not the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter because you can actually read it this week. So, in conclusion, this is not the GWN. Really.
1. Bugday!
Like almost every Saturday at the beginning of a month this week has seen a nice gentle bugday. Some bugs got fixed, others found patches and need some testing. Bumping happened left, right and center, and in the end lots of things ceased to be broken. The demands for daily bugdays are still denied by those in charge. All users interested in helping are asked to have a look around on the Gentoo Bugzilla and/or join #gentoo-bugs on IRC. And remember, it can only be fixed if it is reported!
Have you done your patriotic duty and reported all breakage you encountered?
2. Random great Gentoo things
The astute reader may have realized that the 2007.1 release didn't happen in 2007. People got busy, bugs sneaked in, tempers flared up ... and it got delayed more and more. Currently it looks like 2007.1 will just silently morph to 2008.0 - but who cares about releases in Gentoo as long as you can get continuous upgrades?
Not content with the rather large update times from official stage3 a certain Daniel Robbins (who seems, somehow, to have a relation to Gentoo) has started publishing newer stages.
http://funtoo.org/linux/ is the location where his new and improved stages can be found. Amusingly they are based on the 2007.1 profiles, so there you have your officially inofficial 2007.1 release before it officially becomes an unreleased 2008.0. Or something. It's a bit confusing, you know ...
3. Other great Gentoo things
A strange fellow by the name of Steve Long has written a Most Excellent (tm) wrapper around emerge. It does lots of amusing things - to quote:
You'll see that it makes it much easier to read einfo and ewarns. It also
deals with failed packages by leaving them til the end and retrying. Any
packages in the list which would need a failed package are also deferred til
the end, when another pass will be made over all failed pkgs. It stops when
either all the packages have been successfully emerged, or when no packages
could be emerged in the pass.
By default it will run revdep-rebuild after (if called with no parameters or
a shortcut [eg update -s to sync first] it will emerge -uDN world and then run
the config-updater if needed (one of etc-proposals cfg-update dispatch-conf
or etc-update - you can set your own in /etc/update; they are searched in that
order, but just putting in configUpdater=/path/blah will override.)
This great toy has no official homepage, but the forums are as good a home as any other.

LOL Gentoo, a blogiggle*
12. Ticks and Trips
There's enough Tips & Tricks already in here. So this space is reserved for some pointless paranoid rambling. I blame the beer. Really, it's not my fault. But ... have you ever noticed that tinfoil is getting thinner? They are trying to get us, I tell you. Now you need a dual-layer tinfoil hat. And what about AMD? They produce in Germany! You know who else produced in germany? Yeah, that's right. And now they are trying to take over Antarctica! Next they'll increase taxes, and then ... I don't even need to tell you what happens next, do I ?
5. Bug of the Week
Instead of Developer of the Week and the Bug Summary ... we present ... *drumroll*
Bug of the week!
There has been lots of discussion in our team about which bug shall emerge victorious for this week.
Here's a few of the top contenders:
As you can see there are some great ones here, fighting for the first place. Since we have no voting in place we'll leave them there - but feel free to mail us some of your candidates!
6. Script-generated part
Meh, running a script is too much work. We'll leave out this part. Run the scripts yourself, you lazy person!
